Engineering Portfolio

Summary

With my fellow teammates Alan Cuevas and Aman Patel, we designed and fabricated a 2-axis linear drive stage system with an actuator that automatically solders a soldering board with pre-placed electronics and pre-applied soldering paste.

Learning Outcomes

  • Designing for simplicity and ease of assembly
  • Working with a highly collaborative team on a multi-faceted project involving design, 3-D printing, machining, and coding
  • Comprehending the engineering process starting from ideation, leading to prototyping, and culminating in a functional product

IRIS Chip Holder

Summary

I designed, modeled, and manufactured prototypes of a holder for IRIS chips that are used at the Optical Characterization and Nanophotonics (OCN) Lab, led by Dr. Selim Ünlü. I used my experience as a student machinist at EPIC to quickly CNC mill and evaluate the practicality and manufacturability of prototypes. This research was presented at the UROP Symposium on Oct. 22, 2021.

Learning Outcomes

  • Consolidate a multi-part product into a 3D assembly
  • Create CAM files that reduce cycle time while making sure material does not deform
  • Machining plastics with small features while reducing burrs
CAD model of pulse oximeter prototype

Pulse Oximeter

Summary

I prototyped a unique pulse oximeter using materials provided in a standard kit for EK210 – Intro to Engineering Design. I designed the pulse-ox to be different and more sophisticated from my peers by 1) creating a hinge for a tilting LCD and 2) designing a handle to make it more comfortable and secure for the user to check their heart rate and blood oxygen level.

Learning Outcomes

  • Design with user experience and comfort in mind
  • 3D modelling with a different software (Onshape)
  • Prototype with a tight deadline and limited resources
  • Write custom Arduino code that uses timers and data storage/processing to display results

Summary

As an owner of multiple electric skateboard and a longboard, it has always been interesting to me to imagine what is happening internally within the deck as I step on it and start riding and whether wood is really the optimal material to build a skateboard deck. With Finite Element Analysis, those thoughts have become quantifiable data and now I understand the importance of evaluating the static characteristics of parts/assemblies made out of multiple materials and choosing what design factors and materials are best for the occasion.

Learning Outcomes

  • Utilizing Finite Element Analysis to test and evaluate the physical performance of a part before fabricating it

Summary

I assembled a 4-bar linkage and created a motion study to analyze the paths of specific points on the crank and the kinematics from the motor, such as torque and power consumption.

Learning Outcomes

  • Assemble a 4-bar linkage without redundant mates
  • Apply motion studies with different forces acting on mates

Summary

I applied FEA frequency studies on a small brass bell to find its resonant frequences.

Learning Outcomes

  • Use FEA to find out the resonant frequencies of objects and parts

Microphone Extension Arm

Summary

My general purpose lens has a loud autofocus motor. The noise is easily picked up by the shotgun microphone if it is placed on the hot shoe slot of the camera. To reduce the noise picked, I decided to utilize the microphone’s pickup pattern to my advantage (sound is not captured too well from sources behind the mic) and place it in front of the lens (autofocus motor). I 3D printed my custom designed cold shoe adapter (5 iterations) and machined an aluminum bar to hold my mic and any other accessories necessary, making my camera setup more versatile and mitigate my sound issue.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn to optimize and strengthen structural integrity in 3D prints by changing print position and designing supports.
  • Remove deadweight material in parts without compromising performance and rigidity.
  • Iterate through brainstorming and testing cycles to find the optimal design for the extension arm and cold shoe adapter .
